Description
The historic viaduct over the River Boyne in Drogheda, Ireland. The viaduct links the Dublin-Belfast railway line. Construction of this bridge reduced the travel time by rail from Dublin to Belfast from 17 hours. Prior to the bridge, passengers were ferried from the Railway Station to the South, by horse and car to the North Station which was located north of Newfoundwell bridge, where Newfield is today. The Dublin to Drogheda line opened in May 1844 .
The viaduct was opened in 1865 and was the seventh longest bridge of its kind in the world, even considered one of the wonders of the age. The designer was Sir John MacNeill.
We think you'll agree, this historic viaduct is still an amazing engineering marvel and a thing of beauty as well.

C. Brock, Fantastic photo of this architectural masterpiece. Love the way you have captured the details in this photo of the bridge and how it is reflected in the water. Great detail where the train crosses over the bridge. Very interesting write up in your description box about this bridege and its history. Excellent photo, voted, google, tweet and FB promoted
