Description
What can be more fun that these deep pink pom-pom blossoms waving in the breeze? Just try touching these shy little wildflowers and watch them roll up their leaves and shrink away from your touch. Called the "shy plant" for obvious reasons, they are one of my favorites to watch for each spring. They spring up in the rocky, sandy soil of our piney woods, along the pathways and road edges where they can find a bit of sunshine. The little blossoms have gold tips and are about the size of a thumbnail.
The Mimosa Microphylla is a member of the pea family, but definitely does not have pea-like blossoms. The fuzzy pink ball is a cluster of tiny flowers. It is also called Sensitive Briar, Littleleaf Sensitive Briar, and the Shy Plant. They can be found in the Southeastern Coastal States of the USA.
