Description
Running tirelessly above the heads of the fairgoers, this lovely lady has a place of honor. Her name is Contralto, and she is accompanied by the handsome Tenor. At the State Fair of Texas, this shapely statue towers once again over the waters of the esplanade - what a beautiful site! They were originally created for the Centennial Exposition by Lawrence Tenney Stevens in 1936. The nudes were made of aluminum and probably melted down during World War II to help with war efforts.
David Newton recently re-created the statues as part of bringing back some of the missing history of Fair Park. Their installation was complete in late 2009.
