Description
Queen Maeve's Grave sits atop the summit of Knocknarea, the uniquely beautiful mountain that dominates the landscape to the west of Sligo. Legends tell us the huge gravesite was built for the Iron Age Queen Maeve, whose father, the high king of Ireland, gave her the region of Connacht as a gift. The enormous cairn atop Knocknarea is 55 meters in diameter by 10 meters high, and is visible for miles.
Archaeologists believe it may really date back to 3000 BC, but who can say that Queen Maeve was not tucked into an existing monument? The rich folklore surrounding Queen Maeve still influences behavior today. It is considered bad luck to remove a stone from the cairn, and a token of good luck to take one up the hill with you to deposit on it.
