Description
A true sign of spring, the lovely Dogwood blossom! In our area they bloom in mid-March and fill the forest with their beautiful white ghostly images. In some areas they are so plentiful they give the appearance of a fresh snow on the branches.
The Dogwood Tree is also well known and loved for it's part in the story of Jesus Christ's crucifixion. Whether the legend is true or not, it is a beautiful story to remember each time you see the delicate flowers of a dogwood tree. The story goes: at the time of the crucifixion, the dogwood was a strong and mighty tree. So strong and firm was the wood that it was chosen as the timber for Jesus' cross.
The Dogwood tree was greatly distressed to be used for such a cruel purpose. While nailed upon it, Jesus had compassion on the tree and said, "Because of your pity for my suffering, never again shall the dogwood tree grow large enough to be used for a cross. Henceforth, it shall be slender, bent, and twisted, and its blossoms shall be in the form of a cross–two long and two short petals. On the outer edge of each tear shaped petal will be the print of nails. In the center of the flower, stained with blood, will be a crown of thorns so that all who see it will remember."
