Description
Afternoon sun casts warmth and light upon a meditative, yet joyful woman. At the ocean, the child in us comes out to wade.
Rare is the person who, upon stepping onto the sand, does not feel the impulse to kick off one’s shoes and go barefoot, free from the confines and constraints of footware. In some ways, it is a larger message given through this action: the sea is a place so big, so grand, so enormously, magnificently beautiful, that it demands to be felt, experienced, wondered at.
In Gathering Thoughts, the woman in the painting is, literally, allowing the surf and the sea to encompass her, to surround her, to embrace her with their sights and sounds and smells and textures. This is not the time to check the phone (and indeed, with no pocket in her dress, there is no place to keep one), nor is it time to check in with the office and see what has passed since we checked 15 minutes ago.
This is a time to gather one’s thoughts in the same way that the woman gathers her skirts to her knees, allowing her to wade without fear of getting her clothing dripping wet. (Although, realistically, the water will touch the hem of her garment, in the same way that the splash of surf, from a higher than normal way, will touch her skin). This is a time for quiet, for peace, for tranquility, for reflection – a time to feel the warm sun on one’s skin and glorify in the difference between that warmth, and the cool of the surf.
Such is the experience of many at the sea, and perhaps because of this, many seek to live there, and if not live there, to visit there as often as possible, and totally immerse themselves in the experience of being in a place so much bigger than the worries of the world.
